Make a Will

Today, I wrote my Will.

I am, gratefully, in perfect health. I am only in my 20s. And I am not what many would consider “wealthy.” Regardless, making a Will was important to me because my family is important to me. If something unexpected were to happen, I don’t want my family to have the stress of trying to determine what I would have wanted.

I was also excited to think about the impact my Will could have. After making sure my family is taken care of, I wanted to include something for the charities I support. I’m not always able to give as much as I’d like to now, but through my Will, I can have a tremendous impact. Even a small percentage given to a cause I care about means that my values will keep shaping the future in ways that matter to me.

It felt strange that something so impactful cost nothing and took less than 30 minutes. And I know that if life changes, I can update it at any time.

If you haven’t already made your Will, or you haven’t updated it in a while, I encourage you to do that this month. August is National Make-A-Will month, and thousands of people across the U.S. will be making sure their wishes, their families, and their charitable legacies are protected. Will you be one of them?

Sincerely,

Megan Garbee
