BCFO knows going to the doctor\u2019s office can be a nerve-wracking experience. There\u2019s uncertainty, stress, questions you don\u2019t know the answers to and questions you don\u2019t know to ask. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">For many people, doctor\u2019s visits are made more difficult by having to teach their provider about their identity in order to receive proper care, or being told that they do not qualify for preventive care like screening mammograms because of the sex they were assigned at birth. On top of that burden, assistance groups often don\u2019t cater to people with their life experiences, leaving them without a safety net or support group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">For many LGBTQ+ people seeking healthcare in America, this scenario is more than a hypothetical: it is their lived experience. Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks is here to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">There are many disparities in LGBTQ+ healthcare. For example: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">When it comes to breast cancer care, insurance companies might deny mammogram coverage to trans women taking hormones because of their assigned sex at birth, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breastcancer.org\/research-news\/feminizing-hormones-increase-risk-in-trans-women\"><span class=\"s3\">their increased risk of breast cancer<\/span><\/a> compared to cis men. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Lesbian and bisexual women are also at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whijournal.com\/article\/S1049-3867(04)00018-0\/abstract\"><span class=\"s3\">greater risk<\/span><\/a> for breast cancer than straight women, and LGBTQ+ Americans across the board are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-lgbt-employment-insurance\/lgbt-adults-in-u-s-less-likely-to-have-jobs-health-insurance-idUSKBN1KG36V\"><span class=\"s3\">more likely<\/span><\/a> to be uninsured or underinsured, with women being disproportionately affected.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/transequality.org\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/usts\/Executive%2520Summary%2520-%2520FINAL%25201.6.17.pdf\"><span class=\"s3\">study<\/span><\/a> conducted by the Center for American Progress details how one-third of transgender Americans reported negative experiences with healthcare providers, including being harassed or denied treatment because of how they identify.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">No matter how you identify or who you love, Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks is here for you.
